Thanks Wintonian, I had tried to translate singular words, but not the two together. It now all makes sense. I made a couple of false tracks that wouldn't lead me to the surname, but then 15a came to my rescue.

Hi wintonian, thanks. Yes it does seem more of Edinburgh and I have the 'reduced vat' but struggling to link the first bit and the dray. Re 30d it's the first letter that's unchecked by the crossing answers. Is it an abbreviation? I was happy with my 3 crossers but begin to wonder.

Re the dray. Got it. Should have looked at the surrounding clue types! Doh.

Hi, granama1,

For 30dn, the clue leads to a three letter word, which is a dialect word meaning “channels”, very popular in The Listener Crossword. The ordplay leads to the first three letters of a word meaning “rest”. The added letter in the entry is the second letter, which is given by 32ac, so the unchecked letter is the first letter of the original answer (which I assumed you already had).

Thanks wintonian, I was misleading myself with RT as in radio telephony for channels which gave me an abbrev for traffic incidents but it had to be one of two things and I found the oft used channels in Chambers (after you pointed me in the right direction). Now for a renewed bash at the NW corner!

Another corker from Phi! All done apart from 20D, where only one word fits, but I can't parse it.

Hi, cockie,

The original answer for 20dn is an eight letter Scots word meaning “scared”. You need a five letter word meaning “destined”, in which you replace the usual abbreviation for “area” with a four letter word meaning “rich”. After the alteration, you have a seven letter word, which is a Scots word meaning, among others, “corrected”.

Thanks, wintonian. I was aiming at the wrong word for destined.

All done. I don't quite understand all the parsing, particularly in the NE corner, but I'm over the line - that'll do me!

Hi wintonian, I'm all done too and I think the word meaning 'rich' in 20 is 'rich'. Can anyone parse15, please?
