Planks - in 7d think of the denominator as a word rather than a number...

Smartie, 7d could have 2 or 3 letters added, both would work.

Sorry if I didn't make myself clear - I was explaining the wordplay not the definition.

I considered using the possessive at 10d but opted for the alt sp for the definition at 7d instead - this gives a 10th three letter curtailment (but can either be said to be definitive?).

The wordplay in 7d leads to an entry in Chambers which is a specific choice of spelling options for the definition. But that's just my understanding of what I see.

As I see it, smartie, the wordplay leads to a genus with two possible spellings but I can't see why one would be favoured over the other.

...that is, if you check the entry for the 's...' word.

But If you check the 'r...' word it gives a specific option.

...and if you check both 's...' words it gives the same definition!

OK never mind I was just trying to help. I'll just go back to passively watching the thread. Every time I try to be an active participant it gets confrontational! Ho hum.
