Planks - make hand handle in 13dn and look at the middle two letters of the last word of the clue.

Can someone explain why there is the need for the first two word in 5dn? It seems to work fine without them - anagram (distressed) of adult on + E+ D. Thanks.

@unclued: there's another way to interpret the fodder such that "Not one"="NO". And the "on" is cryptic grammar

Is the creature a bit fishy? Can't parse 34 or 35....

Bobbycollins: What do we compare these with? The truncations do not depend on the lengths of the answers - for example 6 and 8 letter answers are truncated by 2 and by 3 letters - and that is not true for the clue truncations either. Besides this does not identify what the 'two ways' are. All of the answers are truncated by either 2 or 3 letters, but the numbers of such answers are eight and twelve. The clues are, however, truncated by 1 and 4 letters as well.

bobbycollins again: There only seems to be one creature which results from the anagram. I think they are squashed when they are tinned, not that this bothers them very much since they are presumably dead when that happens. So I don't get the hint about unhappy creatures.

34: the definition is 'several works' and the first three letters to be omitted mean 'eccentric'. 35: the truncated word is 'aster' and it is pruned by one letter

Thanks for the squashed sardines!

Since the truncations are of either 2 or 3 letters, the words treated in the clues gain 2 or 3 letters. Hope I don't get a rollocking for that.🙄
