I had exactly the same for quite a long time Smellyharry and the young fish answer works perfectly well - apart from the typo providing the wrong letter for the hint. Can't be a common occurrence for a clue to work in two completely different ways!

I’m very late to this as I have been in hospital. Have filled the grid, but don’t understand the wordplay for 38a RENTE. I’ve got the second word from the misprints TAN etc, but can’t make out first word. I’ve got TANERAOO which doesn’t make sense.
