I tend to agree with you murky. All you end up with after all the slog with terribly convoluted clues is a completed grid that is an unreadable mess. To what end? Just baffling would-be solvers, perhaps?

I’m confused about the entry INS. As it’s an across answer how can it undergo a N/S flip? Doesn’t that equate to a normal entry? The other 3 letter answer is just reversed so is fine.

That’s correct Unclued. There are a few others that end up appearing ‘normal’ because the transformation makes no difference

OK thanks merenz. I just thought that all the group changed - obviously not!

I fear you may be being misled, unclued. The word INS does not contain mirror symmetry, either EW or NS, so it is not the same when transformed. Note that it shares its middle letter with another clue in the same group

It is, drxx, but I don’t grasp your point. Clearly letters will appear unchanged after a NS reversal if they have horizontal symmetry. That is the point of the unclued across answer. But others will not. All I’m trying to get across is that if your final transformed grid contains the word INS written like that, IMHO it will be wrong. Apologies if I’m being dense
