Novice - You should try that idea out.
I'm sure all entries will have to be homogeneous, so don't mix them up.

merenz - the extra letter is an r but removed from an adjective not a noun. That only leaves an E for electronic required - as in email. I don’t think “on the internet” is an adequate descriptor for the E but I guess it is close enough.

Thanks Quisling and Smithsax. That makes perfect sense now. I’d overlooked the significance of the “of” in the clue... not for the first time and probably not the last.

Chambers
e - electronic, esp as over the Internet, as in e-mail, e-trading, e-economy

Hotelwhiskey7 that was my point. The e means electronic which is often but not always over the internet. E cigarettes for instance.

Fair enough. That’s the joy of Chambers I guess - if it in, it’s legit.

I would never have suspected that seventy maps to ‘s’ - but there it is in the (electronic version) of the BRB...

I'll give this one last bash today, probably about 2/3 solved. All Group 4 sorted, most of 2 (can identify the transformation). 1 & 3 still significant gaps. A couple of hints would be appreciated. 'Kidneys, one of them rare...' I have an answer that fits a Chambers entry but it is Latin and doesn't fit the second half of the clue as far as I can tell.
'French native servant....' I assumed I was looking for a servant with an s in but can't find a suitable synonym.
Thanks.

Granama1 - I got these:

Kidneys is an anagram of two words with the last letter removed from the second (nearly being the signifier), plus an extra letter.

French native is a word for a waiter in a French restaurant, take a letter out, add in S and you get a French native.
