Shoot! I had the 5 subjects. The one I was missing is the 6 letter name.

Glad I could help. I didn't know which N you had, so gave very little away!

Thanks Malone. I was going to move on to today's EV but think I will leave that until later and let the feelgood factor of completing what I found a challenging but enjoyable puzzle - and my football team going top of the Championship! - linger a little longer.

Murky @38, re 9d I'd be grateful if you could enlighten me on that one or even let me know if it has an O or L in it!
Apart from that, I'm done. Considering how early on I got the second of the titles (so knew the subject at that point) the rest was still a slow process until the penny dropped. My standard quibble was using i or i' for in which held me up for a while, otherwise enjoyed the clues and topic. Chambers got a good workout.
It's funny that Chambers is the prize...I don't think it could be done if you didn't already have one (or more).

You are allowed to choose an alternative to the chambers dictionary as a prize.

Finding this a very tricky solve. Just a handful of clues to crack but only half a grid filled. Nudges on the following would be appreciated.

35 45 49 across

9 26 30 38 down

49a is split 3,2,3,5 ...1st word usual synonym for gents (not toilets!)
