It's the shortened form of 'has' + a vulgar term for 'young women'.

well, granama1, I will if you will ... 1D def is garments. Young women is slang, and offensive (though not obscene). I'm no further forward with 1A, but I assume that I'm looking for a 13-letter theologian. Is it a proper name? If so it's not my specialist subject.

Cockle, it's a synonym for 'theologian' rather than a named person.

Mmm. One could argue that a !A could do his/her job without the need for a theo- Still, it's only a crossword. Thanks.

My answer for 1d ( thanks again drxx) has 6 different letters, so how do I decide what goes in the unchecked spaces?

38d is driving me mad!

I don't think so cockie...granama is simply an anagram! However, I now have 1d...well I have the answer, now have to fit it into the grid.
16a, if I'm on the right lines I'm looking for an anagram with 'an unknown' included. The things I've come up with are rather obscure and I haven't found them in Chambers. A nudge in the general direction much appreciated.

Still can't see 1D.

How can it be shortened form of 'has', as Drxx says, when the clue reads "Have . . "?

I think it's just a typo from drxx, it's in Chambers as "a shortened form of have".

Yes, you're right about my typo, ginge (thanks) and apologies - it's confusing enough as it is.
