21 . Game is the definition. A five letter synonym for 'roast' , then 'Limitless' is the usual indicator, 'is passed round' indicates what to do with two letters.

Struggling with the NE corner and wonder if I've bungled 10d as I have it beginning with 't' and can't make that fit with 8a as I thought 'test - ten minutes' gave ea. That's holding back 9 even though I worked out the place of entertainment.
Other than that, got the theme, missing pairs etc. Any hints gratefully accepted.

Def is minutes. About is ca, and test is tax.
Can anyone help with 6d?

The first word of the title is the definition - the second word is an anagram that goes before 'ess(e)' being' minus (e)nergy.

Tremendous puzzle which took ages to succumb, but well worth the effort. Very taut clueing, with some devilish but fair wordplay.

Thanks XIJ, I was convinced it was exam - x and m ie ten minutes. Can assist with 6d if the ess(e) hint hasn't done the trick.

So far, I am completely stumped with the NE corner, apart from 8, 9 and 16. Not being much of a reader, I haven’t a clue as regards to the author and the books. I think I may have one title, ‘The Dead’, but Googling that gets me nowhere. Am I correct so far?

If you add that to the one at 14ac you'll get the theme (it's an anagram of the synonym for 'brave' + J).
