I have the theme, from 14ac, one of my favourites. However, I'm stymied by 17ac/18d - what goes in Sq 18?

Also, NE corner is proving difficult eg 16ac would be helpful.

Hi dylan, square 18 is "B", 16a is E + (if in dice).

This sounds crazy but I’ve filled the grid and still don’t know what’s going on! Can guess words missing from 14a clue but can’t find a series of books etc. Any generous nudges appreciated.

Combine the missing words of 27d and 14ac and google them. You'll get a title from the series.

All finished now, with a nice theme, but I still don't get the parsing of 18d

Dylan, 18 D has a 'recalled opening' inside the answer (ie something reversed) and it's inside most of a word meaning 'house', in a specific sense! (House that's no ordinary = lose a letter).
