It's not a square as the four clash cells aren't exactly symmetrical? Or am I going mad.

You're right Lumen. I assume connect bottom to top of the cells on the horizontal and left to right on the vertical.

Hi both, it is a square, albeit rotated. Using the centre of the 4 cells as reference points/nodes there is no need to get out a protractor. From one node to the next it's consistently along 9 up 1 or along 1 up 9.

This is where I think the preamble makes the endgame ambiguous.
If the digits filling the cells ...(the 2nd instruction)... then the tilted version would be the only choice - as it is it's 'the clash cells' that must ... (1st word of 2nd instruction)... and that can also be achieved the way bubber suggests.

Unless we've missed something I imagine either way is acceptable. Each does what is required in the second instruction. (I don't post the entry, but like to know if completed properly.)
