crates - that would only work if it was 'endless rodent' (which wouldn't give a very good surface) the 'd' must be removed from dORMOUS(e) somehow, and the only way I can see how to do this is by using the 'd' from 'den' - 'giving up front of den'
Your interpretion of the wordplay would result in DENORMOUS.

...I think I see what you're getting at now - (d)ORMOUS(e) giving up front of (d)EN to 'the rest' (of that word = EN).

If anyone is still on this thread can you please help me finish this off before tomorrow's offering takes my attention. Despite so many prods on here I am still unable to solve 16 across - the 2 words is leaving me flummoxed. And is 30 down HEADS and why? Many thanks.
