crates - that would only work if it was 'endless rodent' (which wouldn't give a very good surface) the 'd' must be removed from dORMOUS(e) somehow, and the only way I can see how to do this is by using the 'd' from 'den' - 'giving up front of den'
Your interpretion of the wordplay would result in DENORMOUS.

...unless it was 'giving up front to (d)EN', rather than 'of den'.

...I think I see what you're getting at now - (d)ORMOUS(e) giving up front of (d)EN to 'the rest' (of that word = EN).

Hi drxx - Your last post is what I was alluding to - Feel confident that was what the setter had in mind ... but as we just get answers who will ever know....

I'm sure you're right crates, and it's quite a novel device I think (I can't remember seeing anything like it before now).

If anyone is still on this thread can you please help me finish this off before tomorrow's offering takes my attention. Despite so many prods on here I am still unable to solve 16 across - the 2 words is leaving me flummoxed. And is 30 down HEADS and why? Many thanks.
