Finished the grid fill apart from 13a, which must be one of the adjusted clues. Any help with that would be appreciated.
I’m definitely missing something, because I cannot understand the preamble. How can 31 down discards form 16 letters for a name. Similarly for the across ones for the phrase. Again, any nudge would be appreciated.

Hi Xij, if you look at the discarded letters you will notice something common to them all. This explains why you have more letters than you need and will help with the phrase. Do you have a hint for 36a it’s all I’m missing?

13a is adjusted replace letter for parking with letter for learner in a rather obscure word for vain. Both words are 8 letters

Nope can’t find it. Can anybody tell me where the s and h are omitted from in the across answers so I can go to sleep content!
