I found this trickier than I had thought when, after reading the preamble and before solving any of the clues, I'd (correctly, as it turned out) worked out what and who. But getting from there to a completed grid took 4 hours. I take my hat off to Serpent for a very clever new approach and for the layers needing to be unpicked to get to the obvious target. This ought to be high up in the annual awards.

I have a full grid and the named person. Even though I know how to modify 1d and 17d I still cannot parse them. Similarly the same problem with 35a. As for the acronym and the phrase, I am currently clueless and sick of grid staring. I shall give it a rest and hope for some inspiration later on.

1 down: last word of clue is definition; T (tesla), Imp with for (during) replacing M (money), written upwards. My problem is that I can only find 7 thematically affected down clues. I think 17 should be one, but it only works without the thematic alteration.

Thanks , Crucifer. It took me a while to find the extra material in 17 DN. Is that the one you have missing?

For 17 dn , use a verb for "sweep" rather than the noun in the clue.

Yes it is TonyNannini. I have a five-letter synonym for panorama, middle letter replaced by two-letter word for fashionable, followed by two letters representing circle and by.

Use "pan" for sweep. Your entry is correct.
