Also I'd appreciate any pointers to the theme word to be highlighted...

First two words are extra

sloth - the highlighted one is British to begin with and American afterwards.

That makes sense, but the rest still eludes me.

Am I right that tablet is the definition- I have an answer beginning with T and ending with A but can’t parse

anag of AFTER + E (tablet).

...sorry qesue, I missed the rest of your question - the def is 'Forbidden to eat' and 'mash' is the anagram indicator.
