Thanks for your comments - glad you enjoyed it. By the way Honor's name is Mishon, although she is often called Mission. She cannot understand why.

When I was a student in London, we used to flee to Hyde Park on a Sunday morning, rather than away from it. Lord Soper was an interesting speaker.

Jigjag, sorry about the Mission/Mishon mix-up. If you like, you could refer to it as Mishon Unaccomplished. I could blame it on my spellchecker, but I think the fault was mine. I was jumping around (not literally) various posts.

Always good to see the correct use of 'literally', Malone, as it has become another of those annoyingly misused words.

I had the rare pleasure of using it last week. I'd had a new security light fitted and was able to tell the fitter, a few days later, that it was literally on the blink - it was flashing.

Aah, simple joys ...

PS Last time I saw bands in Hyde Park was when the free concerts were there around 1970. Saw Pink Floyd, Canned Heat, John Sebastian ... but can't remember who else.

The process of `verbing` (itself a horrible expression) continues apace.

My morning newspaper informs me that mountaineers Sir Chris Bonington and Doug Scott were `... the first people to summit the Baintha Brakk mountain (aka the Ogre) in the Karakoram region.`

It seems summit is now the opposite of plummet!

Honor loved your term "Mishon Unaccomplished". She told me she is often called "Mishon Impossible"

Steve, I'm glad you got to use 'on the blink' in the totally right sense.

Tyke, there's 'summat' wrong with 'summit' as a verb!

Jigjag, if there's an outbreak of greengrocers' apostrophes at any point, we can send your friend out on a Mercy Mishon.

A sixth-form pupil once said, “I enjoyed that homework you set yesterday. I literally went to town on it.” I was glad he had enjoyed it but mentally regretted his misuse of “literally”. He went on to say “I went to the Central Library where I was free of distractions.” Collapse of elderly party.

Thanks for sharing Rad ... a case of being`hoist with your own petard` perhaps? (although hopefully not literally!) At least you have the satisfaction of knowing that the pupil actually understood the meaning of literally!

Pedants are respectfully reminded that this thread does not provide a share-tipping service. A reader says that he bought shares in Sainsbury’s some time ago following our “recommendation” and sold them last week after we advised “avoid Sainsbury’s”. He made a substantial profit before the price collapsed after the merger with Asda was blocked.

Please note that our “recommendation” was in the context of visiting the store to check on apostrophes, and later we suggested “avoiding” the store until they sort out their multiple branding using 4 variations. It is a co-incidence that we used share-tipping terminology.

The reader asks if he should re-enter the market. We advise entering indoor and outdoor markets but not stock markets.

Justine Greening today in Parliament referring to `gridlock`...

I do not believe that it is going to change and we can keep on going round in circles, with all the damage that that does to businesses and jobs, or we can confront it,decision it and find a route forward for Britain.

Decision it - sheer poetry!
