I wonder how they met - at a cricket match? seems unlikely.

Nice to see clues in Times in the last few days for 20/20, clipper, and spear after discussions here, and Wigan today!

It can`t have been easy for Raquel to meet someone as famous as Fred Trueman !

Yes it does seem as though the Forum has an influence on crossword compilers - we had a few interesting posts from `ASetter` I remember.

That must have been before I started looking at this thread. I have not noticed anything from "asetter" in recent times, but Jigjag commented the other date that there had been a discussion re a barbers story. That must have been about a year ago.

It was very kind of Jigjag to allow her to share his bed. It was probably a large one. I assume all Yorkshire members were invited, I mean to the wedding not the bed.

Yorkshire members are not allowed in our own Pavilion so I was not too disappointed to not get a wedding invite - I don`t like dressing up anyway.

Thanks for your reply. I don't have a dislike of Yorkshire cricketers in general, just that incident was irritating (and possibly unique).
Mike Denness, England captain in the 1970s, is probably the best known Scottish cricketer for those of a certain age. I used to know of a number who had played county cricket but have forgotten all the names. There is a remarkable amount of cricket played in Scotland despite the annual battle with the elements. One area, surprisingly, is the Aberdeen area but I think most is played in the central belt.

I can remember Peter Such playing for England, Mike Denness was probably the best ever Scottish cricketer but I`m sure many more played county cricket. Interestingly Douglas Jardine was born in India of Scottish Parentage - I`ve seen his portrait in the Long Room at Lord`s - he played the game hard, but fair, just like Yorkshire !
I hope Cricket continues to thrive in Scotland and everywhere.

I was disappointed that none of my sports have been allowed to resume. I read that only sports suitable for middle-aged gentlemen are allowed. I dont qualify, but I thought I would have a go at fishing.

It was such a nice day yesterday, that I walked to the canal with very basic equipment, and a few pies, for a pleasant couple of hours in the sun. It was rather crowded but some helpful anglers suggested where I should sit. Everyone was socially distant and I was even offered some maggots which I politely declined.

I didn't catch anything of course, and although I saw some tiddlers, I didn't see any pikes, either the fish or 2 metre stick type. It was pleasant chatting to the others, and I might have another go sometime.

Grunger,

How good of you to give fishing a go. It was fun to read the report of your experience, fruitless (fishless?) though it was. I'm glad to hear you turned down the maggots - the thought of those getting anywhere near your stupendous pies fills me with horror.

I'd had a quick look at the list of 'resumed' sports. Tennis was there, but I'm a much better spectator than player. Golf … never, not in this or any lifetime. Volleyball and basketball both involve a fair bit of jumping, dashing around - so far too energetic for me. I did, eventually, come across the perfect option … surfing. Who would have thought that online browsing of crossword forums, reading book reviews, watching programmes on the BBC I-player could count as 'sport'?

Have you tried fishing for compliments?

Malone

Pleased you`re enjoying the surfing - I know you love sport really.

I knew you were a keen surfer, but I thought it was the other sort. I am surprised they are allowing basketball, the players seem in very close proximity. Perhaps it is politically correct. I cannot understand why cricket cant resume. We are far apart on the field and we can do without tea, and dump our kit on the boundary etc.

I didn't get any compliments, fished for or otherwise, apart from "we dont get many women down here" which might have been one. I gave away a few pies which they appreciated.
