Thanks, Spoffy. I wasn't going to answer Lumen's query as I couldn't parse it all, but his post had been there a little while.

I had to break off from this and am still at the square stage. Am I right in thinking the six misprint clues are: 1a ,43a. 44a,15d, 22d, 30d?

Thanks Malone and Spoffy, for 13a.
Never heard term = terminus before.

Drxx, your post has just led me to understand the real identity of the setter, though I haven't located him in a place of captivity yet.

Since no highlighting is required, how many solvers of this puzzle are going to go any further than revealing the landmarks.

The preamble doesn't say anything about finding him in the grid - having identified the phrase and landmarks I reckon I've finished.

Only those looking for a satisfactory narrative murky.

Triton might have intended his position in the grid to be highlighted but that would be unfair on some solvers (those less likely to know the personalities involved). And there are at least two options for an appropriate colour - more uncertainty - it's probably best left alone.

I'm in awe of everyone here who seem to have filled the grid and found the 12 letters with no difficulty.

I think I know most of the entries but I can't see how 21, 24, 39ac and 30dn work, which leaves me with three of the 12 still to find. I'm not too inspired by what's being said about the endgame either.

I am struggling badly with this and I too am very impressed by those who have found it quite reasonable. Hints for 20a, 26a, 10d and 22d would be welcome. And I cannot see where the definition in 1a is.

Also, I'm not sure what is meant by the displaced letter. For example, in 43a, a Q should really be a G but which can be said to be the displaced one? It depends on how you look at it, surely? And although it says these letters spell a word, I assume they have to be jumbled first.
