Got 36a. Songster is new to me.
Your hint on 1a: 8 letter word starting with S. Replace N with 4 letters. from a 5 letter word starting with A. That would give me 11 letters.

Thanks drxx for the further info on 1a and 36a. I had the answer for 1a written down but couldn’t parse it... got there now (sunray - replace AN not just N. That gives you 10).

Sorry about that merenz/sunray - I had the archaic 4 letter variant of that 5 letter word (but you're right - minus 'an' would work just as well).

... sorry 'one' = 'an' is the right way merenz (as you say) ignore that last one from me.
