Woodlouse, maybe I'm too used to there being a devious twist, especially when the puzzle itself seems pretty straightforward - no puns intended!

Gitto - I take your point about the first 2 letters but when offered 2 options the straight line assumption seems a fair one. Indeed there is nothing to in the instruction to say the letters need to be contiguous. In theory you could select the correct number of letters from all over the grid as long as they spell the correct words - but that would be silly.
On reflection I am more worried that the letters do not really describe what happens in the grid. I was wondering If I should write some letters upside down when I realised that the finished puzzle to be submitted Is still a conventional rectangle.

Hi Dylan - it was a pure fluke. Last week I was trying to identify things based on the years we had - bearing in mind one would be a 250th anniversary. The Wiki entry through up something interesting but it was irrelevant last week, but when I saw a distinctive part of the name this week it just clicked. I really must get out more! ;¬)

Hi scarlett, your misprints in both cases are correct but your assumption that some of the across clues "wrap" within rows is not. Hope this helps. I

I filled the grid reasonably quickly but all I've done this evening since is stare, stare, stare at the grid trying to following the revealed instruction. And yet everyone seems to be saying how obvious and easy it is. A hint would be welcome!

orson - as you have finished grid you are aware of the strange fills of some. Look at diagonals to find the answer to the instruction.

And I've got it now so I can sleep tonight! I cannot see how it could have been deduced from just five letters and thoughts on last week's puzzle, though. But that's by the by. One comment that it doesn't accurately describe what happens is true, though.
