Unfitgrandpa, the pattern isn't so much a recurrent pattern in the jumbling of the answers, it's more related to the endgame. If you can decipher the instruction and work out what the grid represents you will see how those ambiguities can be resolved.

Thanks, Dryden. Staring me in the face. I had identified the theme as well as the message. Must be getting old(er).

Hi I am just back from three days away and have failed to get hold of yesterday’s Times and puzzle 4496. Would anyone be prepared to send me a scanned copy? Happy to put £1.70 in the next charity box I see!
Many thanks

I'm feeling really dim as I've solved the whole puzzle without working out the answer to 22ac. Obviously anag of LONE + C + HELD, so I could just write it in and leave it at that, but none of my anagram solving aids comes up with anything at all.

No one here has commented on it so it must be obvious. Help please!

IonaCarr: it's past tense so to find it in Chambers you have to find the present tense version of the word. So try the same pattern without the D or without the ED or without the ED + a possible doubled letter.

Thanks for that - told you I was dim. I relied too much on Bradford (not there under repudiate) and Chambers Anagrams (only first six letters given, and no past tense).
