As a general observation, when Araucaria set the Guardian bank holiday puzzles it was quite common for both clues to be run together as Maskarade has here. But then I've been "solving" these for a lot of years !

However I have complained elsewhere that the Guardian's themed puzzles too often use themes which are mainly of interest to octogenarian Classics graduates, and I'm afraid this one falls into the same old trap !

Well I am nowhere near being an Octogenarian and didn't study Classics, but I still enjoyed it ...... I may be in the majority. I have leant some new characters, but some were already in mind from my schooldays
