All now in (literally on the back of an envelope, noting the 'grid references' on the online version against the solutions. I'm still not completely convinced that I've got the right fit of the two possibilities though, as I still haven't found a second indication in the clues. It could be C.

Hi MacGee - like you I have finished it but I don't see the significance of the instruction. What a belter though! Probably have been quicker if I'd printed it off - took nearly an hour.

I've now parsed the C, which is also one of the ones that gives the direction. I've got it wrong, of course!

Thanks both - we crossed.

btw this means that the Q one isn't a direction indicator. Which other one is, then?

(Based on the C needing to be a down clue.)

I've just noticed that the Q clues are given in different orders in the paper and online, so "first Q clue" is ambiguous!

Thanks SDL. I took "went under" as indicating a down clue, but "Across" is much more obvious!
