Thanks for Pannier confirmation - Chambers must be fairly unique in that definition. So far can only find Petara as a potential scrabble word using net resources, but sounds as that might be a similar story to Pannier - not sure how the other ealier hint about what follows Saratoga fits in....

Hello Alan
Saratoga T***** were also known as 'Steamer T***** and were used in the old days mostly on board ship for transporting clothes etc.
The two names Saratoga and T***** were used together.
Hope that helps.

Hi Sorry got interrupted in the midddle of writing the message.
For number 99 surely it must end with a river because the clue says 'the river' which usually means the name of a river. My Chambers is a very old copy so not very good.
I have read through the pages so far but am still stuck on number 19, I did google american club but it didn't seem bvery helpful. Is there anyone still out there or have you all finished??

tin lizzie. Think most of us have now finished but I look here sometimes as am not happy with 99.
19. Is a container as well as a card game
I am no good at giving clues but think this has been mentioned before on this site.
Good luck!

Like most others, I have finished except for 99 and am not happy that I have a good solution. What if we split the clue as -

Hold on to catch/when suspended over the river.

ie build up the answer as "when" or a similar word (as, while, etc) surrounding a short word for a river - perhaps a specific river, or a general term, or "r".

Alternatively, it could be a synonym for suspended (eg hung) in front of, or surrounding, the river bit.

Catch can mean many things - sporting (as in cricket), fishing, snag or problem, bolt or lock, etc.

Lots of questions but no answer, I'm afraid.
