There are a couple of interesting stories about my first trip to the Pyrennes! I was co-driver and "responsible adult" on a Venture Scout trip. The trip had been budgetted on the assumption that we would camp at a commercial site; in fact we found a much more basic - fine for us - National Park site, at Pont d'Espagne, above Cauterets. This was far cheaper, so there was lots of money in the kitty when we set off to drive back. The leader asked the committe of senior scouts whether he should refund the money to parents on our return, or do our best to spend it on the way. You can guess what they decided! We ate out at restaurants every night's stop on the way back.

The other point - see if you can work this one out. My co-driver had won a genuine Olympic Gold Medal, but he didn't compete at all. How?

Hello Chris and thank you for putting me right on the birds - the
French commentators obviously do not know their birds! and I just
repeated what they had said, not knowing much about birds myself!

Hope you are enjoying the Tour?

Hi, Rusty!
That is good that you now have your replacement microwave oven
I find mine invaluable....I don't know how I ever managed without it.
I do my poached egg in it every morning!
That saves so much time and effort when in a hurry to go out !
Yes, it was sad about Peter McNamara.
I am trying to remember the name of the other tennis player who continued to play on in the Seniors......
He used to play the fool on court ...whilst still playing brilliant tennis?
You will surely know who I mean?
What is his name?

Hello, Pigale!
I am glad you are enjoying the TdF.
Does your friend like to watch it, too?
My tooth socket seem to be healing fine, thank you...it hasn't really given me any trouble.
My problem is the pain killing injection sites...I have a lot of pain and swelling there ...I am hoping it will wear off soon.
My somewhat "battered" appearance is arousing comment!

Hello, Chris!
Okay, I give in......
How did your co-driver win an Olympic Gold medal.......without competing?

Did McNamara not play with McNamee? They are from the time when I watched tennis! McNamara was 64 and had cancer.
Your injection sites are taking ages to recover, elle. unless they are infected I don't think there is much to be done, though.

Hi Chris,
Yes, I agree and from the various interviews he gave, it would seem that he was very surprised himself at his performance!
He is quoted to have said 'Quite frankly, I did think I could get
a reasonable time, but without winning against the big names; but then the crowds and my Yellow Jersey (which I did not want to lose) carried me on their wings" .

So far, things are going well for him, and I hope it continues, he has
a very pleasant personality.

Actually, I've just discovered that it wasn't a genuine gold medal - that was shared.

He was called Andy Archibald, and was the reserve for the gold medal winning Modern Pentathlon team.

I found this paragraph online:
Fox, Nightingale and Parker received just one gold medal between them in 1976 because the IOC rules allowed only one medal per team if there was a team and individual event held within the same competition. However, Everest Double Glazing had four special 'unofficial' gold medals made for the winning trio and the reserve Andy Archibald, and presented them at the Waldorf Hotel in London a month after the Montreal Games. The medals carried the inscription: "The team that won Britain's first modern pentathlon team gold medal against all the odds. Olympic Games, Montreal, 1976.

Yes, Ros, McNamara and McNamee were Doubles partners.
We were only talking about that earlier on..... they played great tennis together!
I don't think I have an infection, Ros, just bruised muscle or whatever! It will go given time!
I just look as though I have gone five rounds with Mike Tyson (or similar)

Hello, Elle!
Yes, I am pleased we got a new microwave.
We were only in the shop for several minutes, too.
I use the microwave most days and would be lost without one.
Do you mean Mansour Bahrami?
I like him, and he clowns about on the court.

Elle, I tend to agree with Ros in that you may well have an infection -
If it still hurts after all these days, it might be worth phoning your
dentist?
I do not wish to panic you, but the same happened to me (on a molar,
not a wisdom tooth) and in the end, the dentist had to prescribe me some antibiotics
