dictionary.com says ho is a call to attract attention to something specified. Apparently as a noun, also a prostitute or a woman who has nad many partners!

Hello, Rosalind!
Yes, I have now investigated "ho".
It can mean "call", though I would use "hoy".
I seem to remember the noun "ho" being used in the film "Sleepless in Seattle"....I think?

Hi, Rusty!
Sorry, Rusty...I was washing my hair!
Re 11a: Bottom is a weaver in a sub-play in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream".
I took "call" in this instance to be a homophone indicator?
"Ho Weaver " - minus the "a" (answer) sounds like "How ever".
I like it!
Thank you for the other parsings....
I did not think of "singer" as a "grass"!
I had got the "oo" as "full of love"..... and "grass root" as the definition of "ordinary folk".
And I would never have got 12a!
Anything to do with cricket, and I am lost!
I didn't know "The Dark Lady" sonnet......
Very well done on finding that!
The Women's Single's Final has just started...are you going to watch?

Update, Rusty!
I have been thinking about 11a......
And I think I was wrong in considering it to be a homophone !
I was too quick to jump to conclusions.
A very nice clue though!
I have just watched the Women's Singles Final....a fairly easy win for Ash Bartley.
The Australians must be very pleased!
I don't think an Australian has won the French Open since Margaret Court.

Hello, Elle!
I think the call is "ho !".
Now I think about it, I think I have heard of Bottom, before.
I think using Indi(a) for a cricket team is a bit of a stretch.
India certainly play cricket, so the setter is correct, but....!
i did not know "The Dark Lady", but it's a good, fair, clue.
I only saw part of the Ladies Final, but I am pleased for Ash Barty.
Good to see an Aussie winning!

The identity of the "Dark Lady of the Sonnets" has been a point of academic discussion almost ever since he wrote them!

Or had you read my "update" about 11a , before you posted your own last message?
I had decided that I had it wrong!

Hello, Elle!
Yes, posts crossed!
No, I was convinced after looking at Chambers that "ho" could be "call".
Still no rain here!

Hi, Rusty!
You have had a nice day!
We, on the other hand, have had rain on and off all the time.
It has been heavy , too.
But we now have a lovely evening!
I am about to watch the Voice Kids: UK.
I think it will be good....
There are four coaches this year.
Jessie J (who was a previous coach on the adult show) is joining Pixie Lott, Danny Jones and Will.i.am
