Rusty, I know you like it when crosswords lead you to new things - but it was me who gained knowledge today! I might never need to refer to the German author ever again, of course.

Hello, Malone!
I had to reverse the post order to read your post!
It was not there!
I do not think the German lad's works would appeal to me, anyway.
I am still struggling to parse 24d?

Hello, Malone!
I have the parse for 24d now.
It was just too obvious!
I was looking for something complicated.

Hi elle

The rainbow cake was a great success, the colours really worked and it was nice, too. Far too much icing but the sponge was good. Making white sponge worked really well, Trex is very good for baking. All nine little girls made dream catchers; I had made one to show them and looked out masses of yarns, bought ribbons, hoops, flowers etc. Kept them occupied half the party! Gosh they did make a noise.
Now got to start on 24 cupcakes for 10 am tomorrow, the next party!

Rusty, my parsing isn't great, but here goes.

Where to see one of trio delivering portion of song (5)
Answer, Intro, portion of song.

The I of (the word) trio has been put... In Tro

It's not a great clue … and the parsing's probably on the same level!

Rusty, I am very glad you got it yourself. That's always better - and sometimes things are easier to see than to explain!

That's what I see too, Malone!
An unusual clue!

Good evening, Rusty!
We ended up with a really pleasant afternoon and evening .
The sun is now shining, though the day is still cold.
Yes, we had "Lessing" previously as an answer , not all that long ago.
And I think in that instance - if my memory serves me correctly - it was the German author whose name was then required .......
Gotthold Lessing.
And not the perhaps more obvious Doris Lessing.
My favourite clues are 1d: database; 5d: Pitcairn Island; and 29a: secant
On the whole, though, I thought it a harder puzzle than the usual Saturday offering?
What did you think?
There are still some parses that elude me.....altho I have all the answers.

Hello, Rosalind!
I am so glad that your cake worked out all right.
And that your granddaughter enjoyed her party!
It sounds as though you were a great success in organising the "entertainment".
And now you get to do it all again tomorrow for your grandson!

Hello, Elle!
It is still a bit rainy off and on here.
I preferred last Saturday's puzzle.
It was more entertaining, I thought.
I think I have all the parses.

Hi, Rusty!
Yes, I did not really enjoy today's puzzle.
I found most of the answers easy enough to get, especially when I had the aid of crossers, but I could not always see the parses.
But there are too many of them to ask you for assistance...kind and patient though you are.....and to be honest, my heart in not really in it !
I have just discovered that I missed a phone call from my daughter whilst we were out......
I am wondering whether they wish to come over tomorrow....
But I think it might be better not .....
Our lounge is full of dining furniture and kitchen appliances ...and not the safest environment for the young one's mischievous spirit!
A visit would be best left till next weekend, when all will (hopefully) be back in its rightful place!
I am reading a book by Robin Pilcher, and am enjoying it.
He is the eldest son of Rosamund Pilcher, of whom you may have heard?
I have read many of her books, and there have also been some successful television films made, based on her novels.
How about you? What are you reading?
