Hi Pigale,
Many thanks for all the trouble you took with the Zola excerpt on the other thread. I'm still digesting it, though perhaps I already see what might interest me most, that is the discussion on innéité. I don't in general share Zola's optimism, and believe that 'human progress' will increasingly be of value to only a small minority of the race.

I see in your excerpt that György Lukács, was one of Zola's critics. Lajos Jánossy was the adopted son of Lukács, and was in contact with my family for a while...I prefer not to be more specific...

Good afternoon, Rusty!
Still wet here.....
I am in for the day now.
I am glad your snow held off, and you were able to make it to the Pine Cone and meet your friends.
Do they return home today?
I too had thought that "pot herb" was two words.
I checked in Chambers which does give it as two words, and the Oxford Concise which has it hyphenated.
But all the online dictionaries give it a single word?
"You pays your money, and you takes your choice"???
I have just one left to parse.
16d: Heads for vacation often during spare time, showing wish for travel (3,6)
I have "Bon voyage"= wish for travel (def)
I thought "v" and "o" for "heads of....."?
Maybe?
But cannot parse it any further?
I have done three of the five puzzles that John sent - this one; the QC; and the Jumbo Concise.
This will be my lot!
I remember seeing one of the girls jump -with her mother - into Poppie's Pond.
I think you sent me a YouTube link...would that have been Lexi?

Hi Meursault,
I know Zola is not everybody's taste, and he has often been
criticized. I like his precision, (the very scientific approach), I like the methodical way he dedicated to research, meticulously studying whatever 'milieu' his next novel was to be set -
I admired his tidiness, as opposed to Balsac's rather 'messy' approach,
an untidiness which was also reflected in his personal life.

I hope you get some pleasure if you decide to read one or two
books by Zola - but choosing which one to read will prove difficult!

Hello, Elle!
My friends go home tomorrow.
Yes, I found "potherb" a strange looking word.
"Bon voyage". "Spare" is "bony", "time" is "age", around "v"acation and "o"ften.
Yes, it would have been Lexi.
This is the lady who started the tradition, Amy Alcott, way back in 1988.
Completely spontaneous!
This was when the tournament was called the "Dinah Shore".
There is a statue of Dinah on the course. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46ZFMxrb8_w

Hi, Rusty!
Thank you for the parsing of 16d.
I would never have fathomed that!
Well done, you !
Yes, bells are ringing......I remember your telling me about Dinah Shore.
Who was the chap who rushed into the pond with Amy Alcott?
It rather looked as thought the jump was his idea?
I am all crossworded up!
I never want to see another one........until maybe tomorrow!
I meant to ask after your friend's mum?

Hello, Elle!
Yes, there is a bronze statue of Dinah on the course.
She loved the game and was a good player.
The lad with Amy was her caddie.
It may have been his idea.
Just heard that Pernilla Lindberg has won this year after 8 play-off holes.
It was not on my TV, so I have not seen Pernilla's leap, yet!
Will check YouTube later.
You are better than me! One crossword a day is plenty for me.
My pal's Mum is OK.

Hello, Elle!
Here you are.
Pernilla Lindberg taking the plunge at Poppie's Pond today.
Think that was Mum and Dad jumping, too!
They said it was pretty cold!

Hi, Rusty!
Thank you for the link showing Dinah's statue.
And what an attractive area where the golf course is....
I didn't expect to see flowers and such pretty surroundings.
I am looking forward to seeing Pernilla leap into Poppie's Pond if you can find a video link!
I doubt I should be so brave as to leap in ...I'd be 'paddling' on the brink!
I have no idea what we are having for dinner....
Somehow the thought of food preparation escaped me.........
I had better go forage and se what I can find for us to eat!
Have you already eaten?
