Hello Elle,
That is very good of you and family helping support the local Crisis
branches -
We have no homeless around here, but in the big towns, there
are plenty and volunteers do all they can.
As I said to Rusty though, some homeless do not want to get
inside a 'foyer' for warmth, food and a bed for the night; they
prefer to remain outside in their makeshift protection.
I remember when a student in the Latin Quarter, we were a group
of about 6 or 7 of us who regularly met under one of the bridges
by the river Seine - There, week after week we saw the same man
(looking elderly to us, but not that much really)
We eventually got to talk to him and he was remarkably well
spoken. Of course, in those days (1966/67) we did not call
these people 'homeless', but rather 'tramp', even if it was not
meant nastily.
Well our 'tramp' told us that he used to be a Doctor in one of
the most best Paris hospitals at the time, and one day, between
the pressures at home (demanding wife and entertaining a lot)
and the pressures at work, he just decided that enough was $
enough, and took to the street! He just managed to get a note
almost anonymously to his wife telling her not to worry but not
to look for him!
Of course, in a large city like Paris or London, it is easy to 'get
lost' amongst the crowd, particularly if you change area, type
of clothings etc... But he was very clever and extremely interesting
to us 16-18 years old!
