Hello, Elle!
That would be interesting, I think, seeing how they test for allergies?
Hope she gets to the bottom of it.
Not much in my local paper.
Yesterday was a local holiday and I presume the courts were not sitting, so no scandal today!
I have done my puzzle.
It was not easy, to my mind!
I am going for a dander soon.

Hi, Rusty!
Well, I have made a start on the puzzle....in fact, I thought I was off to a good beginning, as I liked "Macheath" for 1a!
I even remember Bobby Darin singing "Mack the Knife"!
But it is getting worse......I have got answers but not necessarily parses........
I think I need a break...and a walk!
Inspiration may strike on my return........
It is raining......I shall wear my cagoule........

Hello, Elle!
You did well getting "Macheath"!
Your strategy is spot on.
Have a break and it can re-invigorate your solving skills.
There are one or two tricky ones.

Hi, Rusty!
How was your walk?
I saw "Macheath" straight off!
cheat - sharper
ham (reversed) - meat
(I have the record of "Mack the Knife" somewhere!)
But I am not making much progress with the rest!
The only German poet I know is Goethe?
I have possibly done about a quarter.....I am not enjoying it, so am conceding defeat!
I have just wrapped up the little one's present for tomorrow.
Rain has stopped ...for now...but still very dark and miserable.

No idea if this helps, elle, but there was a German poet called Schiller who wrote Ode to Joy that Beethoven used in his 9th. von Schiller actually.

Hello, Elle!
We are lucky up here, the weather is lovely now!
Sorry to here it is not so good down your way!
That's a pity about your puzzle.
I have vaguely heard of Goethe.
I knew he was some kind of writer.
If you would like to know the answer.
The definition is "time please".
Answer "How goes the enemy?".
I am having haggis and chips for my tea!

Hi, Rusty!
Oh dear.....
I had got as far as "How goe(s) the ....."
I saw how "Goethe" fit and the "s" from "s (onnet)"
And I can see retrospectively that "rival" might mean "enemy".........
But what on earth does "How goes the enemy?" have to do with "time please"?
I am completely lost here?
On the plus side, I found the QC quite a good puzzle!
Haggis for tea sounds good! I love haggis!

Thanks, Ros...but it was Goethe that was needed!

Hello, Elle!
I love haggis, too!
One of my favourites
Did I ever tell you that I like a bacon roll?
Now, I am a bit surprised that you can not link "time" and "enemy".
I am fairly sure there is a phrase "time is the enemy"?
Maybe a relative of "chasing the clock"?
If you look at Anne Bradford's book you will see she has "enemy" listed under "time" and vice versa.
I can not see "time is the enemy" in Brewers or Chambers, though.
Surprised at that.

Hi, Rusty!
Well, yes, I have heard the expression "Time is the enemy."
But I have never, ever, come across the expression "How goes the enemy?" meaning "What time is it?"
Yes, I have found it in Chambers...... but I still think it is weird?
Have you ever heard anyone ask the time in that fashion?
I'd be expecting to look around, and then duck before he/she pulled the pin out of the hand grenade!
( Maybe I need to do another park survey....?)
