Good fun from Qaos...easy to hit snags early on though if you enter answers un-enciphered.

I was going great guns on this but now I seem to have come to a halt which makes me question an assumption I made (on what I thought were reasonably logical grounds)

Are all the encoded answers the same length (as I had assumed)? This assumption served me well in most of the bottom half, but I've come unstuck in the top half.

Thanks Ixion, though I'm still struggling. Are the non-encoded answers valid words? As I said, the cipher I had worked for the lower half (except 24 down) but is of no apparent use in the top half. Does the cipher change?

Ah, I see what you mean.

I think the fact that one number crops up more often than others is dictated by what the cipher is based on. The cipher named in the completed grid is not specific to that or any number.

The answers before encoding are all valid words.

This has been my least productive crossword day ever. I may have one five-letter word and that's it.

Want a hint to any of them ffannie?

Done it! But took me most of the day ... 7d and 12a stupidly took me forever ...

I am over half way there but have ground to a halt now.
Please can I have some hints for 1a, 14d,and 6d & how to do the encoding?
