They are both normal jws and your letters in place are correct...24D is quite literal, ie name of a tree without its final letter

I am OK with 24D and have an answer for 25A. I need to work out the rationale.

Finally see the indicator in 5A. Category A.

Messed up 20D. 2 letters for cat. 11A.
Was up late.

So two more (clues) to go for category B, but they all seem OK. Suspect one might be 12A.

syzgy - I'm getting a bit lost, but I think the 2 you're missing are 12ac and 4dn - one letter to be added to each of the clues. 20dn requires 2 letters to be added to the clue, and they give you the category in 11ac.

Hope that makes some sort of sense.

Those were the suspects. 12A needs an "I" for the indicator.

4D will take some thinking.

Thanks ixion and others for your help. I thought I had finished the grid a while ago and think I have all the extra letters, but STILL can make sense of only one one of the groups. Still wonder if I'm barking up the wrong tree - are the 2 groups connected? In which case I've got something wrong because I need (eg) an F to go with my KY. Please help before I go into total meltdown. Thank you :-)

mrs t - there's no connection between the categories that I can see. The one with KY in is clear enough, and the other is chemical elements (and I can see no link between the various elements).

Oh! Thank you so much peterm, I've been over-complicating. Unusual for the Guardian (especially the Genius) not to have had a connection. Thanks again, I can get back to my life now.

So near and yet so far. The bottom right is defeating me. Can anyone help with 23d as that may put me back on track. I have got 22a and 25a so i have B_ E_ _
