Martin - if you've got the categories as per the Special Instructions, there really can be only one answer to 9ac.

Yes, clearly you can only do one or two (mainly 9A and 21A) if you've worked out the categories. I've got this far (three to go) knowing only three.

Down to last clue - 7D, and have been for a while.
As far as I can see there's only one word (baldness related) that fits, but I can't connect it to the clue, which I believe is the remaining clue of the group of six mentioned first in the preamble.
Can anyone help?

Hi All, I am so confused. I think I've finished the grid, and therefore have all the extra letters - but I can't work out what the groups are! I do have a theory but can't make it work completely - are the 2 groups linked? Eg does DM correspond to I? In which case my 'LI'added to 9ac must be wrong. And I have no clue about 11&18ac (or at least I know what the words are but not the abbreviations which go under their headings) Please help! Thank you.

there are two groups of 5 which should be apparent if your grid is complete and two "stand alone" abbreviations which are described by 11 and 18...your dm is one of these

Ok thanks Ixion, at least I can now eliminate the 2 for 11 & 18ac - dm makes sense for 18 and I have a suitable one for 11. Still no wiser about the other groups tho - obviously not seeing the wood for the trees.

Hopefully not stating the obvious here Mrs T....one group of 5 is all two letter abbrevs, the other is 4 singles and one of two letters...5ac may have a couple of different "insertion" possibilities to create the anagrind.
