Thanks Sudokulover. My problem was that I had 4D as the wrong type of clue and the wrong abbreviation category (E in RI adding CT), although I knew that the solution was correct. All clear now.

Just remembered about the Genius - 1st Monday. Must mark calendar.
Not too tough & thankfully the over-all solution is not entirely reliant on the extra letters. However, it would be nice to justify them all.

To recap: category A - 2 letters; B - 1 or 2.

Answers:
9A B, 2
21A B, 1
7D A
8D A
17D 18A, 2
23D B, 1

Clues:
20A B, 1
22A A *
19D A

So, 3 clues unaccounted for.

5A doesn't appear to need extras. Anagram L + BESIDE. Is "cry" an indicator?

Does anyone know how to maintain basic formatting here? Multiple spaces are crunched.

Categories worked out, everything complete, except 26A - I think it's a case of adding 2 letters to a word in the clue to fit the same category as the others with 2 letters (except 9A)..? If it's not, then arrgh - which clues have the 2 letter additions (I have 7D, 8D, 19D, 22A)?

Sorry to disappoint Barista, but 26ac is an ordinary clue. Think social networking as your starting point.

Thanks PeterM - it is the obvious answer then... but with an apparently full grid I can't see the last of the 1 letter additions. Hmm.

By which of course I meant the last of the 2 letter additions.

By my reckoning, 5ac needs 2 letters added.

Sorry, I mean 2 letters added to the clue for 5ac. To make an anagram indicator.

Struggling with the last 2. I think I have the categories but I'm not at my best with this sort of puzzle where letters get added.

25A "Slow deceitful type, evil one on the inside" (5,4). I have S?A?? / ?I?E. It looks like a normal clue.

24D “Tree’s abandoned end of the plot” (4), I have ???N. Again it looks like a normal clue.
