On double checking my clues for making sense(of a sort) I've noticed options for 28A and wonder how others see it....

1. Girls folk - her ring missing ??? ????heron responsible

or

2. Girls folk - her ring - miss in g??? ????heron responsible

or

Something else entirely - if option 1. the unchecked letter of the three letter word has two possibilities.

I think there's a 3rd option:

Girl's folk - her ring missing - h??? ????eron responsible.

lol - thanks peterm - that was one of the first ones I put in - for some bizarre reason I seem to have totally ignored the "h" - time to push the submit button!

As I look at this again, if you've got the same answer as me, your options 1 and 2 don't work - spelling.

Sorry, my last post crossed with yours. I think this puzzle's sent us all a little crazy.

I couldn't see the point of "folk" in this - or am I missing something too?

It certainly works with just "girl" - suppose though that "'s folk" points to the responsibility part.

I see it like this: Girl's folk (her ring missing), "Hold chaperon responsible".

Well as a complete non starter (sounds better than miserable failure) on this one I am going to print all this thread out go though it with a fine toothcomb for all the hints and tips I can get and lock myself in a room until I get at least one answer sort of on my own!
Thanks to everyone who does post useful hints each month as I find them helpful when I get stuck.

I agree that this wasn't a crossword, even though a few cross words were aimed at it by me before, eventually, I finished it. It will be interesting to see from next month's Grauniad Crossword Editor's bulletin when the first correct solution was received. It certainly wasn't mine, which wasn't early, and possibly isn't correct, either.
