Thanks once again for the hint re 20d - strange one that I thought, not one of the best but as Araucaria said in the preamble all passages make sense (sort of.)

All done now - I thought this was brilliant, majority of clues were superb with a few dodgy (sort of) ones that I guess he did his best with.

Making slow, but steady progress, teeth gritted, as I'm determined to finish it. This is the most difficult puzzle I've done since an AZED Playfair word square some years ago. I'm staring at 11a in despair, having all the check letters, but no idea even where the break is. Any offers.....please?
