nunoesque: 22a has two rhyming words which differ only their first letter. Also, remember that Everyman frequenly has long answers that rhyme.

Agreed - hadn’t seen insertion of Vera - another way of getting there. My way is more convoluted than yours!

Hi ruby.
22a doesn’t have a definition, strictly speaking. I guess it’s a sort of ‘&lit’. The solution is an acronym 1,1,1,1

You mean 23a I think not 22? It is a first letters clue if that helps.

Sorry, yes, in my response I didn’t check Ruby’s numbering - it is 23, clearly.

Yes, it was 23 - sorry!
And yes, the acronym makes sense now. I was thinking fruit!
Thanks both

Thanks, Brendan!

I just found a Chambers online, and sure enough, the last two letters of 7D mean "cheat" (colloq.) in definition 14. Had no idea.

(But I've been doing mainly U.S. barred puzzles since 1976 and had not encountered that usage until now. Except for a year when I tackled Listener puzzles, always armed with my 1994 Chambers, which is no longer with me.)

Re 22A "The solution is an acronym 1,1,1,1 "

Sorry to nitpick, but since the answer is not pronounced except for naming the letters, I would call that an "initialism" rather than an "acronym".
