Thanks Jono. Should have known 12a as we often come across it in France as we do with p...... which can mean mixture.

I really enjoyed this except for my LOI:15a the definition which seems a bit loose but maybe it’s arcane, or it’s my lack of knowledge. I’m still a bit baffled.
FOI: 1a. LOI: 15a.
Hard to choose one COD. I particularly enjoyed 16a, 24a, and 16d, but I’ll go for 4d which was so witty.

15a the first two words and the third word are two separate clues to the answer, like a double definition.

8 clues solved for me and I am now goosed.

Could someone please give me a nudge on 4a and 8a?

4a - I can only think of IMAM as an answer but probably doesn’t make any sense.

8a - is ball-dress GOWN?

Hi Druh. 4A parses as 2, 1, 1. ‘Everyman’, i .e. the setter, gives you the first two, the others are alternate letters. Def is stingy.

8A is a philosopher - an anagram.

I also laughed at 4D, but I don’t get the ‘key’ part of 20D, even though the answer is clear.

Happy Sunday, all

And thank you, Everyman. An entertaining start to the day.

Barry, key is the definition. It’s an unusual usage but worth remembering as it crops up in crosswords quite often.

Hi druh6sm,

4a- alternatively indicates alternate letters of the following word.
8a- After alterations indicates an anagram of the preceding words.

Hope that helps.

No, “Everyman is” might be I AM or I’M.
“Everyman” on its own implies either I or ME.
