Still can't see how to parse 15a. I have written it down, but still beats me.

15a parses as a single letter followed by an anagram of a "children's doctor" who might be more familiar to US boomers.

Geeker, I suspect you meant reversal rather than anagram, and I recall having one of the books at home when I was quite young here in the UK.

ChrisE- thanks for the steer on 21

Roof- re 22a: strays is definition, 'actively' is anagram indicator for desires as well as the 'back (letters)' of 'younG' and 'waifS'

jono, I actually meant anagram rather than reversal. I hadn't noticed the reversal. 🤣 [I guess reversal is technically a type of anagram and "review" could mean either...] I made the same goof in another recent Prize.
The good "Doctor"'s books were ubiquitous in my US childhood.

The children's doctor was so good you could rarely get hold of them in my local l.....y. There was one in particular that was my absolute favourite but they were all good.

I was in the same state as elliptic until reading this forum: couldn't solve 3d because it ended in "a", and slightly puzzled by references to the US President! But I've got it now, with a different answer for 11a.

But my LOI will be 6d: I have 2 crossers and no idea. Any hints?

FOI was 27, COD perhaps 28.

6d is discussed upthread somewhere.
Defn. "Like", it's a 6-letter word for "starting the day" with 1st and last letters removed.

Hi pamd
6d was my last in as well as it took a while for the parsing penny to drop. Def is ‘like’. For the parsing, remove the first and last letters from the present participle of what you could be said to do very first thing in the morning (assuming that you don’t work nights 😏)

Ah, thanks @geeker and @rogissimo: penny has dropped.

I'd even gone through Crossword Solver without spotting the answer!
