An absolute cracker from Arachne. A real challenge with a wide variety of clues and misdirections to keep us on our toes.
FOI as far down as 27, LOI as far up as 6d.
COD? So many to choose from, but 14d was an especial delight.

FOI 6a.
LOI 16, which stymied me for a long time and caused DNF fears.
Several tricky parsings.
Only very minor cavil is a couple of extremely easy clues, but overall a stellar puzzle.

Too many strong clues for a single COD.
Top tier: 28, 5, 14, 15, 1.
Other rankers: 26, 21, 2, 7 and 19.

I know what you mean about the extremely easy clues, geeker, but I forgave them because it was good to have a couple of ways in, and also because they were almost in and of themselves sort of misdirections, in that I found myself thinking ‘can it be that easy, or am I missing something?’

The easy ones had nice surfaces, so I can't be too critical.

Regarding last’s Saturday’s Ababa/Adaba debacle, I note Brendan has posted today describing this a “sheer blunder” while offering his apologies.

So at least we weren’t missing something :-)

I'm about 3/4 done, but finding the finish difficult. A couple I'm not sure of.
25a I can see the first 4 letters, but where do the last 4 come from (if my answer is right)?
7d does "hereditary" really mean that? (to give the last 5 letters)
