Thanks again Candledave- the penny dropped and after an hour's concentrated effort I have a full grid. Now for the fun part!

crowdedmorning, there are no clashes so I suggest you double check those crossing answers, I had to do that as I used a + instead of a - in one of my entries. I do not think that you can have a 99% grid fill if there is a mistake in your equivalencies.

Gitto—you’re absolutely right. I don’t know how I managed to make the same mistake so many times!

Very enjoyable. First one I've been able to do for a while that didn't need a calculator or a spreadsheet, which is always a bonus.

A letter/number assignment puzzle that can be done with just paper, pencil and a scientific calculator is a rare beast indeed and this was one of them. A very well set and most enjoyable puzzle. Thanks Hedgehog.

Feeling a bit thick here today. After several hours and despite candledave's hint I am nowhere. Zeros identified and one square filled in the grid and that's it. A nudge would be greatly appreciated!

kitsune, the clues candledave highlighted do yield a lot of information on how the choices for several letters can be reduced. I can only suggest that you closely examine and analyse them - I found them to be very productive.

I usually complain about number puzzles and the need to bash through them to get to the answer with brute force and ignorance. (And Excel.)
Well, I apologise.
No previous puzzle has been remotely as tedious as this one. It has elevated mindlessness to a new level.
Clearly, that makes me excessively dim, because all that I could deduce without a trial and error approach was the two zeros and the value of one cell.
Nice endgame, but an appalling experience.
