Should the ‘varying degrees of effect’ be taken to mean that the n or s is moved up (or down) to the next available slot, rather than as far as it can go, I.e into the furthest available slot? If
For example, in 1d, should I leave the sequence of the first 5 letters intact, and move the n up a couple of squares only? I can’t do that in 6d, though - it has to go as far as it can because of the across solutions.
castafiore - both those solutions are right. The trick (I finally discovered with help from here) is to leave all the downs in the correct order except for the necessary displacements.

As Jono has said, you may move the appropriate letters any number of squares in the correct direction. How far in each case is determined by the crossers - you cannot alter the ORDER of the unmoved letters, and the across solutions must stay as is.
