Yes, sometimes the relevant letters need to shifted towards the gap and sometimes away from it. It depends on how you orient the theme object in the gap.

Actually not quite. On going through all the changes in detail it would appear that the theme object is always oriented in the same direction. What varies is which of the two shifted letters appears in the upper solution of the pair and which in the lower.

As per usual I'm left with one unparsed clue...

I've been working on the assumption that "Nick finally" is a Roman numeral but, even if that's the case (which I'm now seriously doubting), I don't see how multiplying it by anything gives the answer, unless it = F which you then a synonym of?

Definition is "shown" and the "sheets" are musical - but they've been "cleared" and that's where the cryptic intro really comes in.

I see, I see (said the blind man) .... I'd been held up because I couldn't find a way of keeping the downs in order, but I've realise now that's the whole clue! - thanks for the hints!
