I tried to construct FORTH for that one to start with!

Chris, me too. And to Judygs’s point it would have been more precise to specify which ‘river’ to remove.

jono@10: Congratulations if Picaroon takes the editorial position, but I'll miss his puzzle compositions terribly. I've already been suffering as a result of Serpent (Jack/Basilisk) assuming Times editorship...visiting the Indy crossword page less often. :-(

geeker - I thought Aorta’s offering on the Indy site today was excellent. Never come across this setter before, and I hope we see many more.

Geeker, I agree, though I do take it as a positive sign for the crossword world that big nationals like the Times and Telegraph are attracting talented setters into editorial positions which I dare say come up rather infrequently.

Slowly getting better at the prize puzzles. Agree that 23a was an inventive, fun clue. Stuck on my last two- 8a & 4d. Any steers would be very welcome

Started an hour ago and not read all the clues yet, but finding it difficult (perhaps I should give up the prize puzzle as it takes too much of my time on Saturday). Thanks for the hint on 21ac. Why didn't I see that as I read through. Perhaps I can build on it.

I'm desperately trying to remember what Thor Heyerdahl was famous for. So far, I've come up with the Kontiki expedition and Easter Island, so haven't made the connection yet. And what should I make of Kant? or Wordsworth?

I'll read the rest of the clues and be back later.

8a is a 5 letter word for investor framing the usual 2-letter Xword entry for 'silver' + final letter as indicated in the clue.
4d is 2 letters + a 5-letter synonym of 'squeeze'
