So is 11a. A word for bureaucrat (think senior civil servant) and a word for avoid. Or a score of nil in cricket.
Lovely crossword. 2d is clever. A very similar clue to 6d, (eggs on toast (6)), was one of the first clues I ever solved, when I went on a cryptic crossword course. The answer was cheers. I began to understand the attraction of this hobby at that point and to appreciate the nuances of our wonderful language!
Happy Sunday everyone.

Thank you.

I’ve never heard of 11a.

How many questions am I allowed to ask on this forum?

As many as you want, Druh! Then it’s up to others whether to respond. (There’s a connection between 2 & 22)

I enjoyed that, though didn’t know the 1D expression and - despite comments above - still don’t get 15A. COD is the Spoonerism at 22.

Thanks again, Everyman, and Happy New Year to everyone from South Devon.

Druh6sm, Norah posted the Posting Guidelines recently, and in there it is suggested that 3 questions at a time are probably best. More than that it can get a bit unwieldy - if different people answer 1,3 and 5, somebody helps with 1,2, 4 and 5 and so on, other solvers lose track of what's going on! Solvers can return with another batch. I don't think there's a limit on the number of batches - my view is that if you need help with half the clues, it's turning into a shopping list!

Barry marten can also mean the coat of a marten as well as the animal itself. If you add that to a word for pine or yearn, the two together give you the answer to 15a which is a measure of distance used in horse races.

I'm not a golfer and I'm still stumped on1d. Is the 2nd word a piece of confectionary? It's the only word I can think of that fits, but that doesn't lead me to getting the 1st word. I have s - u - .

Hi Helen, your idea for the second word sounds right and your letters are correct. The missing letters are part of the anagram so you can probably guess them. Chambers notes the term as “N American informal”.
