Not difficult, but pleasingly different from the usual run of Everymen, I think, with a nice variety of clues.

FOI 1a, of course. LOI 2, because it took me all the crossers before the penny dropped as to what was going on.

COD? I’ll go for the delightful 6d.

Thanks to Everyman. Definitely gentle, but it took a while for 2 and 12 to sink in from the crossers.
FOI 1a
COD 6: easy but good surface and funny.
LOI 26.

Notable that there's a symmetrically located rhyming pair plus a symmetrically located "eye-rhyming" pair. ;-)

Think I've got my LOI 21d but why ASAP?

(I'm American) and recall that usage from TV medical operating room shows. It is used in other contexts...abbreviation of a Latin word.

Thanks - never encountered answer as an adverb before!

I agree. Nice and gentle and a slightly different Everyman. Also have 6 as COD. I had never heard of 1d before.

Could this be the work of a US locum (1D, 21D, 'race car')? As usual, I'm unable to parse one solution -- 15A. (I guess it parses 3,4, but if that's the case, how does the clue lead to the second word?)
COD 23A -- a Spoonerism that actually works without having to mangle any vowels!

It is a synonym for a word in the clue

15: defn. "distance raced", parses as 3 ("marten perhaps"), 4 ("pine").

15 is a very good clue IMO with tricky wording and some misdirection.
