I am finding this one really tricky and want to finish it now. Just four more to go. Hints would be appreciated, I don't want to spoil it for others.

50d. Left side of arse forced into Carol's skirt? (6)
I have ?A?O??

64a Became hostile to Times leader on Grauniad's net circulation (6.7)
I have ?U?F?? ???I?S?

59d Popular retreat with independent ex-vice president (unable to accept election result?) (2,6)
I have I???N???

74a Public hoarding Bill's ham (7). I have O?T???T.
I thought it might be OUTPOST, but that does not seem to fit with any possibilities for 59d.

Thanks in advance.

Hally, in 74a. Your first T is incorrect. Definition is "ham" as a verb.

well, since this is the only chain I know on this site that gives actual answers - 79 begins with "pay". Perhaps some kind soul will enlighten us with the quote - it seems to end in "suggest otherwise" ...?

Many thanks, With your help I have now corrected my 75d and 74a, and managed to guess the remaining answers, I hope correctly.

I think 65d is a bit misleading as "doctors" seems to be a verb meaning something done by vets, that we chaps would not want done to ourselves.

Maggieriordan, if you go to The Guardian website and navigate to crosswords you will see that they have a quick cryptic crossword. This is designed to help starters like yourself. They also do a quiptic crossword which is more straightforward (usually!) than the standard cryptic. Also take a look at the website fifteensquared.
Happy solving

Hi Prospero, you are correct with the ending of the quote. Have you got anything else?

One thing that threw me was that you had two one character words following one after the other. I initially thought it was a misprint until I realised it was a person's initials. Once the penny dropped that gave some pointers.
