I did exactly the same, rosencrantz, though on reflection I think I would use the actual answer rather than the one I first thought of, so I’m not sure why I went for the latter!

What can I say. Brockwell is becoming my favourite compiler. So much to like here. 13d is a new word on me but very easy to solve. The rest is just clever misdirection and really smart clueing. Like others picking one COD is tough but I'm going 10a.

I see some clues that are related but not 100% sure of what it really is.

Rocky7 - as far as I can see the only relationship is the rather brilliant one to which 18a provides the key.

Well I hadn't even picked that up Rog until you said that despite all the hints earlier. That is quite brilliant in fact. I loved 18/26 in the days before Fifa and their like.

Do you know the story of why 18/26 was called that? Put Falco in front of it!

I didn't know that chrise. But I did have to Google that after your post because I didn't know what that was and its other name. Funny how you just accept names like that without ever questioning them for all those years. I think I still have the starter box in the garage somewhere.

Rocky. The first version I had in the sixties used "flat" players (i.e. not moulded) but it might have been second hand. They were less aesthetically pleasing but at least they didn't break every time they fell on the floor and were trodden on! I heard the story of the origin of the name many years ago but assumed the English translation (h***y) referred to a pastime and not a bird of prey.

HI everyone

Been going about one and a half hours and finding it very hard as usaul with Brockwell. But, I have a few solutions and haven't even read all the clues yet. I'm horrified to see that a football game seems to feature (yes, I did get 26ac, so maybe I can guess 18ac). I'm very busy today after driving to and from Swindon yesterday via Yatton for a family get together (journey back was horrid). Apart from usual Saturday chores, I have to make a cake for Monday (my Bridge group meets at my house) and a friend is coming tomorrow for wreath making. I still have to venture into the garden for the greenery, but it is too wet and windy at the moment. And I still have my cards to write!!

I'll be back for some hints if I get time later.

I must have missed the previous discussion of 18 26 that Jono referred to, as I’ve never heard of it. The buzzard was straightforward though. Overall, I found this one quite enjoyable, especially after last week’s Paul horror. My COD is 17. Brought me a smile.
