I didn't start until late - too may chores this morning.

Finished in less than hour. It was mostly a write-in. But thank goodness as I still have things to do. Christmas puddings steaming on the hob and washing to get in before dark. I love an easy crossword now and again.

FOI 1ac closely followed by 1d, FOI 9ac, because despite the hints above I cannot parse it. COD I liked 5d becasuse of its parsing.

Late start for me but just finished with very little drama (which would imply this is definitely on the gentler side!).

Was a bit stuck until I sat down and put some proper thought into 1A and 1D, everything else tumbled quite quickly after that.

COD probably 7D, but I admired the economy and disguise in 2D's surface.

Hello, Roof. You said "FOI 9ac", but you must have meant LOI. If you put a 2 letter word between the first 2 letters of the answer, you get a word which can mean "caring". That 2 letter word can mean "happy", though that is certainly not the commonest meaning of the word.

I have just taken the very unusual (for me) step of solving today's Guardian's "Quick" crossword puzzle, having previously done the main cryptic puzzle and the quick cryptic one. For anyone who hasn't done all of them, you may like to look at clues 11a (quick), 16a (quick cryptic) & 22d (cryptic). (That's if anyone's still around; I've never known this forum to be so quiet.)

That’s an interesting observation, Micky. With those three crossing letters that word is the only common word that fits so perhaps not surprising that it should pop up fairly regularly, but three times on the same day, that is certainly unusual!

I always do the Quick and Quick Cryptic as a warm up to the Cryptic. I noticed some common answers myself today.

I was actually grateful for the warm embrace of an easy crossword today after a distressing week. Everything just flowed in -- in record time for me -- and it left me feeling a little smarter, even if that was a white lie.

I've enjoyed the addition of the Quick Cryptic - I tend to leave it for Monday mornings, and knock it off while getting the kids ready for school. Find it's a good way of getting the grey matter going to start the week.

On the Quick - I'm frequently surprised by the amount of weeks I complete the Cryptic, but am left stumped on a couple to finish off the Quick!
