Regarding 1a: like everyone else, I was thrown by the fact that the much more well-known second word didn't fit. Penny dropped for me when I worked out the correct anagram fodder.

akg - First, last, and 'middle' clue all on the same theme, as predicted by Jono. (Any more clues than that would make it less neat, I guess.)

I really enjoyed this, some clever misdirection. I do agree about “a” in 4d though. The wordplay in 1a was clear enough that it was my FOI.

And the various references to “3” are as subtle a hat tip to the 300th puzzle as was needed I thought.

Brendan @2 (sorry for tardy response, but I've only just solved 12a). With cafés round our way struggling to survive, a singular 12a is a common offering. Or even one which you have to add to your meal at extra cost!

Slow start here but still complete in round about average time. Not quite understanding 16A other than the vague connection with 22D?

Hi, Cumbriansolver. 16a parses 6 ("abstract") 3 ( a bishop's "See" in England) and the whole thing means the same as 22d.

Found this harder than usual. FOI was 1d. Tried to shoehorn various wrong answers into 1a until I saw the anagram fodder. CoD for me was 25a.
Just to add to the 3 link, isn’t an 11a approximately 30 days?

Struggling to complete having made much use of the quick solver. I'm fairly sure I have the answer to 9d, (apart from parsing the last 2 letters of the first word?). But I cannot get anything to fit and make sense of 6d with the crosser from 9.

Also I can get the Yorkshire man in 5d but not the mean... Hence my 9 must be wrong.

Help with 6d is appreciated.
